Dabrye, the hip-hop alias of Ann Arbor’s Tadd Mullinix, returns after a quiet year, save the odd remix (such as T. Raumschmiere’s “Monstertruckdriver” for Novamute) and his extensive touring (US, Japan, Europe, Australia, etc.). Dabrye has patiently been building a hip-hop monster.Dabrye’s first two releases, One/Three (on Ghostly) and Instrmntl (on Eastern Developments, owned by Scott Herren AKA Prefuse 73) were focused on the wordless beatscape as a mutable object. But “Game Over”, the first single from the forthcoming Two/Three, is straightforward street hip-hop. The cut features a guest appearance by Detroit’s Jay Dee, Slum Village veteran and producer for artists such as Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, Common, and A Tribe Called Quest. Also featured is Detroit MC Phat Kat who tears right trough the track. The 12" features another new song, “Magic Says”, a deep dub burner that nods to Mullinix’s love of dancehall and ragga jungle. Dabrye is back with his unique interpretation of raw hip-hop—a refreshing new look at a long dormant style.
